Pharmaceutical Chemistry-I

 Objectives :

To provide students with basic organic, physical, and analytical chemistry and to prepare them to understand successfully other courses as biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, phytochemistry, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. In addition, the course deals with the application of the general theories and procedures of quantitative analytical chemistry to the analysis of chemicals and medicaments associated with the practice of pharmacy .

Contents :

Theoretical

The course is divided into two parts .

Part I . Introduction to organic chemistry and Principals. Topics include the factors affecting electron availability in atoms and molecules, concepts and principals of organic reactions mechanisms. Highlighting the nomenclature, physical and chemical properties of organic compounds .

Part II . The course provides the students the fundamental information about the different types of chemical reactions, chemical equations, reaction rates, mole concept, and reactions of acids and bases in aqueous medium. It also focuses on the qualitative analysis of the most common acidic and basic radicals. Topics of physical chemistry include : gases, kinetics of chemical reactions, thermochemistry, thermodynamics , photochemical reactions, and electric conductance. This course also covers topics related to the quantitative determination of chemicals using titrimetric methods (acid-base, and non-aqueous titration).

Practical

Part I
Identification of organic compounds . Study of their physical and chemical properties .
Part II Qualitative and Quantitative analysis of inorganic cations and anions
.
